Garris Elkins: "Something Beautiful Is Coming”

Something is coming

Jan and I live on a quiet street nestled in the foothills of Southern Oregon. We are shielded from much of the noise generated by the communities in the valley below. There are times when it is completely silent.

On a recent morning in the stillness, I heard the distant and barely discernible sound of a train horn. In all the years we have lived in our home, I had never heard a train horn before. The closest train tracks are seven miles away. The distance made the horn sound soft and almost poetic in the quiet of the early morning hours.

As soon as I heard the sound of the train's horn, I felt a nudge of the Spirit and heard the words, "Something is coming." I knew this was the voice of the Lord. I also knew He was not speaking about a coming disaster, a war or another terrorist attack.

This was a different kind of announcement. This was an announcement about the release of a new measure of God's manifest presence upon the earth – something beautiful.

When Solomon wrote the words, "He has made everything beautiful in its time" (Ecclesiastes 3:11), he gave us a prophetic principle of how God works. He promised to make all things beautiful in the course of time. Everything in this world that is broken and dysfunctional will have an appointment with beauty.

When the events of life appear to grow darker, the light of God will shine brighter and brighter until the full day of revelation. Light will eventually overpower darkness and reveal the fullness of the beauty of God.

"A Work of Beauty"

As I wrote these words the Lord spoke and said:

"You are seeing painful things that have produced scars and wounds in your life and in the lives of the people you love. You think these things will always remain. You might even feel helpless to bring about change. Don't forget that I am involved in the events of your world. I can take the deepest pain and transform it into great joy and celebration.

"As I raised My Son to life, I will do the same for those who put their trust in Me. My greatest purpose is discovered on the other side of what you call impossible. I am the God who can transform a marred and disfigured circumstance into a thing of beauty.

"I am asking you to entrust yourself to Me. You are in an era of human history where you will not be able to keep up with all that takes place nor any longer live in the illusion that you fully understand what is unfolding. This compressed time will reveal the unresolved fears and insecurity that live unchallenged within My people.

"As this acceleration takes place, step off the treadmill of fear and rest in Me. In My rest you will see beauty developing when others see only death. Despite the chaos and evil perpetrated by some, the higher reality is that My hand is on you and My creation for a greater good. The work I am doing is a work of beauty."

Listen For His Voice

When Paul wrote to the Church in Ephesus (2:6), he said we are now – in this present moment – seated with Christ at the right hand of the Father. This heavenly position is our higher reality. In this position there is no wringing of hands or living in fear or dread. We can remain confident in the promises of God in this life because our hope is anchored in something eternal and beautiful that is coming our way no matter what we see around us.

As I heard the distant sound of the train horn that morning, I realized God was inviting me to "listen for His voice".

Today, in the middle of the noise of a fearful culture, God is inviting each of us to find a peaceful place in our hearts where we can hear the gentle whisper of the Spirit telling us that something beautiful is coming.

"Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life." Psalm 23:6 The Message
